God called Dominic to start a new evangelization that would later acquire universal horizons. Pope Honorius III expressed the purpose of our Order when he wrote the following to Dominic and his brethren:
"God, who continually pours new life into his church, wished to bring our times into harmony with the apostolic church and spread the Christian faith. So he has inspired you to embrace a life of poverty and discipline and thus to devote yourself to preaching the Word of God and proclaiming the name of our Lord Jesus Christ throughout the world."
...to embrace a life of poverty and discipline and thus to devote yourself to preaching the Word of God and proclaiming the name of our Lord Jesus Christ throughout the world. Religious men and women followed the directives of Vatican II to go back to our roots and revitalize our individual charisms. Interestingly, this is what has led to the current investigation of religious women. We have done just that. In 1991, then Master General of the Order Damian Byrne in his letter "In Collaboration Together" addressed to the entire Dominican family declares "...we Dominicans have a very precise identity. We are all preachers. This is our vocation. Everything in our lives is directed to this."
And, should you need more convincing, we find these words in Article 7 of the Basic Constitution of the Order of Preachers:
"Continual revision and updating of the Order is necessary, not only on account of the spirit of perennial Christian renewal, but also on account of the special vocation of the Order itself, which compels it to gear its presence in the world to the needs of successive generations."
