Sister Bertilla Brungardt, 86, died Thursday, August 28, 2014, in the Dominican Sisters' convent infirmary, Great Bend, KS.
Born December 17, 1927, in Liebenthal KS, as Germana Brungardt, Sister Bertilla was the daughter of the late Adam Joseph and Josephine Heili Brungardt. She was raised by her father and stepmother, Emma Wasinger Quint Brungardt. She entered the Dominican Sisters' Community September 10, 1944, and pronounced her first vows August 13, 1947. She celebrated 65 years of religious profession in 2012.
Sister Charles Marie Brantl died August 21, 2014 at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Columbus, OH. Her wake and funeral took place August 25 and 26 at the Columbus Motherhouse Chapel of the Dominican Sisters of Peace which her nephew, Curtis, and nieces, Joy and Virginia, attended.
The Legacy of a valiant woman named Sister Ann Rita Sullivan began on this earth 99 years ago. Irene, as she was named by her parents, was the first child of Jeremiah and Mary (Healy) Sullivan. Two years later the family was blessed with another baby girl named Rita. By the time Irene was seven years old, they had lost both parents and were sent to live with Aunt Margaret. They also boarded at Rosary Academy in Watertown for several years. These were difficult times, but Irene and Rita forged a deep sisterly love that would continue throughout their lives.
Dominican Sister of Peace Laurene (formerly Malcolm) Hagman, OP, died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH, on Wednesday, July 16, 2014. She was born in Columbus, OH, on October 15, 1931. Sr. Laurene is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Laurene (Gasman) and brothers Richard, Stephen and Robert II. She is survived by her sisters Beatrice Elgin, Betty Spencer and Dorothy Shumaker, and her brothers Donald Hagman and F. Thomas Hagman, DDS. Dominican Sister of Peace Jeremy Lawlor, OP died on June 27, 2014, at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, OH. She was born in New Haven, CT, on June 20, 1937, and entered the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1959. Two years ago, she celebrated her Golden Jubilee. She is preceded in death by her parents Andrew and Margaret (Coyle).
Dominican Sister of Peace Anne (Cyrilla) White, OP, died at Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH, on Saturday, June 21, 2014. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on March 24, 1928. Sr. Anne was preceded in death by her parents Robert E. and Margaret (Houston), two sisters, and three brothers. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Sr. Anne entered the Novitiate of the former Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1947 and made her profession of vows in 1949.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 20, 1926, Maureen Gertrude Zablotny was one of the four children of Gertrude Boyle and John Zablotny. Before entering religious life she took care of her young siblings after the death of their mother.
After completing her novitiate, she made her vows as a Dominican Sister of St. Catharine, Kentucky, on August 15, 1949, taking the name Sr. Gertrude Veronica, OP. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Siena College.
Sr. Fara Impastato, OP, died on May 8, 2014, in Mohun Health Care Center, Columbus, OH.
Born on August 29, 1920, a native and nearly lifelong New Orleanian, she was preceded in death by her parents, James Impastato and Cecilia Asher, her sisters Mary Pilkinton and Lucia Impastato, and her brother Fr. Salvatore Impastato. Sr. Fara was the beloved aunt of nieces and nephews in Texas, a cousin among many others in the south.
