Thankfulness For Our World, Northeast Associates Recommitment Ceremony

Monday, July 9, 2012

"The drums beat it out and the people sing about it and they dance with noisy joy that you are the Lord! ...You also have pulled the other continents out of the sea. What a wonderful world you have made out of wet mud, and what beautiful men and women!" Prayer of Ashanti people in Ghana from An African Prayer Book (click here to see the full prayer)

The July 4 holiday is an important patriotic holiday that encourages all Americans to reflect on the goodness and gifts in our lives. We are called to be thankful for our  families and our American democracy. And, as Dominicans, we pause in our grateful reflection, to see ourselves in solidarity with our world. Later this month, as we approach the 2012 Summer Olympics, we will be reminded again that even in these competitive games, we share in the humanity of this world.

Desmond Tutu in his prayer collection, An African Prayer Book, shared the words of the Ashanti people from Ghana to remind us of our 'noisy joy' and the thankfulness due to the "Creator of Our Land." Let us as Dominican Associates and Sisters of Peace renew our Chapter Commitments in order "to bless our land and people and in the whole world prepare us for the service that we should render."
