Congratulations to our Dominican Sisters of Peace in Oxford, Michigan, who received the “Golden Shoe Award” this year for the largest increase of funds collected from their chapel for the annual Crop Walk, which feeds the hungry nationally. The walk was held on the first weekend of May this year.

Dominican Sister of Peace Luisa Derouen was honored at a beautiful farewell event at Most Holy Trinity Parish in Tucson, AZ, on Sunday, May 2. The party was a joyful celebration of Sr. Luisa’s contributions to the parish and included all the trimmings—from mariachi band entertainment to traditional Mexican barbacoa (pit barbecue). After four years of ministering in Tucson, where she rebuilt her life and ministry following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Sr. Luisa will be relocating to St. Catharine, Kentucky, address health concerns.

This month’s Just Reflecting essay, contributed by Justice Promoter Sr. Judy Morris, is entitled “Can Pentecost Happen Again?”  Many thanks to Sr. Judy for sharing a wonderful reflection on the almost-lost art of civility, and the importance of civility as a foundation for honest discussion of any issue, particularly those related to peace and justice, which can so often evoke passionate responses.

On April 24, the parish and school of St. Columba (Durango, CO) paid tribute to Srs. Kevin Clavin and Edith Hauser for more 27 years of dedication and service. Many hands contributed to a beautiful Mass, where the community sang a special Irish Blessing over the two Sisters, and a festive reception. A sunflower theme was carried throughout the event, with even songs in the Mass including “Like a Sunflower” and “Bloom Where You are Planted.” Another lovely element was a memento given to participants – a packet of sunflower seeds with a note attached reading: “Celebrate Sr. Edith and Sr. Kevin by adding the beauty of sunflowers to your garden. Join us in continuing the sow the seeds of Catholic education.”
