Dominican Sisters of Peace Named to “8 Wonders of Great Bend”
GREAT BEND, KS - The Great Bend Convention & Visitors Bureau and Chamber of Commerce & Economic Development has announced the winners of their “8 Wonders of Great Bend,” with “The Dominican Sisters” named the triumphant winner in the history category. The contest gave businesses, organizations, community servants, architectural landmarks, and cultural traditions the chance to be recognized for their significance in shaping the Great Bend community as we know it today.

Sisters Enlist Youth to Pray for Peace
Representatives of the Dominican Sisters of Peace engaged more than 650 individuals in praying for world peace at this year’s National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC), held November 19-22 in Kansas City, MO.

Kansas Bazaar Supports Nigerian Mission
This year’s Great Bend Mission Bazaar, held November 14 at the Great Bend motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, was the most successful in the annual event’s history, which began in 1929. While the total amount raised for the Nigerian Dominican Sisters won’t be tallied until after December 31, the numbers have already surpassed those of previous years. Aside from financial success, this year’s bazaar also involved more participants from a greater geographic area, both as contributors of craft items for the sale and as purchasers of goods.

Sansbury Care Center Employee Receives Award
ST. CATHARINE, KY – Congratulations to Imelda Lucinda Cocanougher, State Registered Nursing Assistant/Kentucky Medication Assistant at Sansbury Care Center (St. Catharine, KY), who received the 2009 Professional Achievement Award at the Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities (KAHCF) Annual Meeting on November 9.

Sr. Patricia Martinez Recognized for Volunteer Work
GREAT BEND, KS - Dominican Sister of Peace Patricia Martinez, OP, was one of the three women honored at the October in-service meeting at the Great Bend Senior Center. Sr. Patricia was praised for her three years of volunteer service with young children in Great Bend’s Head Start program. She and other “Seniors 55 and better” volunteers provide personal support and encouragement to help children achieve academic and social success by assisting them with school work, games, and listening to and reading with them. They serve as role models for children who need one-to-one attention. Congratulations Sr. Patricia!

Sr. Betty Ann Hesse Receives Nursing Award
LOUISVILLE, KY—At a luncheon October 29, the Louisville Area Chapter of the American Red Cross honored Dominican Sister of Peace Betty Ann Hesse, OP, with 2009 June Bissmeyer Nursing Award. This award recognizes one volunteer nurse who, through the past five years, has shown exceptional leadership by contributing to the nursing programs and services of the Chapter. Sr. Betty was honored for making a difference in the lives of those whom the Red Cross serves. Through various volunteer and staff roles, Sr. Betty Ann has worked with the Red Cross in their Disaster Health Services program since 2001, assisting in more than 50 relief efforts in the United States and Guam.
