Read a reflection offered by Sr. Rosemary Rule, OP. Sr. Regina Marie, OP, has been at Sansbury Care Center since 1996 when she came as a computer assistant. She also served there earlier from 1983 to 1988 as a receptionist and office assistant. She was born in Mattoon, IL, on April 30, 1929, to George and Mary Regina Bruner. She entered the Dominican Sisters in 1948 and made profession in 1950. Most people knew Sr. Regina Marie as a very private person, who did not speak about herself. But Sr. Regina Marie handled detail with a great deal of precision and could be counted on for behind the scenes work. She did not want to be out front on any project and was content to help make things happen in the background. Her own funeral instructions were an example of her attention detail as she frequently kept track of who was going to do what during the funeral. And everyone attests to her desire to die, being ready to return to the Lord and to her dear friend, Sr. Claire Marie Bell, who preceded her in death. Gayle Guthrie tells the story that when Sr. Regina Marie was checking on the details of who would speak at her funeral, she told Gayle, "whoever ends up speaking better keep it short, I don't want a long eulogy. If they talk too long, my toes may curl up." So let's be sure to keep it short! Sr. Regina Marie was an educator at heart serving in a number of schools in Nebraska: St. Teresa in Lincoln, Blessed Sacrament in Grand Island, Sacred Heart School in Greeley, and St. Mary in Bellevue. She also taught in Nativity School, Memphis, TN; St. Joseph School in Mattoon, IL; and Sts. Simon and Jude School in Louisville, KY. Her last education assignment was at St. Dominic School, Springfield, KY, as a secretary and tutor. Sr. Veronica Colahan recalled when a small group of novices set off down the road to St. Rose Parish to visit the nearby Dominican brothers. But as they took the back road they were confronted by a big black bull that was not in any mood to give the right of way. He staked his claim on the road and the novices scrambled over the fence to safety knocking each other out of the way. Meanwhile, one of the friars appeared galloping in on a horse with a lasso to capture the bull. They all still laugh about being chased by that bull and the fact that they were ready to elbow each other out of the way to get over the fence. Every novice for herself! Regina Marie among them. Sr. Regina Marie's wake and funeral Mass were held at the Sansbury Care Center Chapel on April 29 and 30. Burial followed at the St. Catharine Motherhouse cemetery.
